Tools used in our lab
Immunohistochemistry
A commonly used neuroscience method that allows us to visualize proteins of interest
Immunofluorescence
A method that allows us to visualize proteins of interest using fluorescently labeled antibodies
Behavioral phenotyping
In order to understand the functional consequences of our transgenic manipulations, we use behavioral phenotyping tests that assess cognitive function, depression, and anxiety in mice
Metabolic assays
Using metabolic chambers, we can determine basal metabolic rate (VO2 and VCO2) in transgenic mice exposed to diets that induce obesity
Electrophysiology
We can measure the excitability of neurons using electrophysiology in various parts of the brain such as the hippocampus
Transgenic mouse models
Using mouse models in which genes are either knocked out or overexpressed, we can determine how these different genes ultimately contribute to physiology and brain function
